Our client invited us to help them design a new extension for their home to suit their growing family. They sought a design sympathetic to the existing Victorian architecture but with its own character and identity. Although the existing building wasn’t short on space, the layouts weren’t functional and access to natural light was limited.

Our approach was to relocate the functional utility space to the middle of the property where the light is poor, and to create a new living space with a stronger connection to the outside. Working closely with the client, we developed a material palette with a focus on texture and tones which complimented the existing building. The light-coloured materials and glazed bricks help brighten the facade and make the most of limited natural light.

The resulting design adds understated character to the family home, with a carefully considered facade composition which compliments the existing building whilst providing a playful new elements. Internally, the rhythm of exposed beams and skylights fill the space with natural light and make the extension feel more spacious.
