Berkeley Homes approached us to prepare an overarching strategy that explored how ongoing development proposals at The Green Quarter could improve the lives and livelihoods of the community in Southall. Our strategy had to establish an unambiguous set of social, cultural and environmental objectives within the context of a long-term development project that will a generation to complete.

Our work sought to present a wide-ranging view on the many aspects that make up Southall’s complex and multi-layered culture. Research undertaken included a comprehensive review of the site’s planning history and legacy issues associated with the consultation - summarising Southall’s heritage, analysing key demographic data, civic and community gap analysis and identifying socioeconomic opportunities and challenges. This evidence base was used to evaluate the performance of the development, identifying a set of principles and aspirations to inform future phases and promoting a holistic approach to social value and inclusion.

Providing a thorough understanding of the cultural history and present circumstances of Southall, the document provides a strategy for how future phases of the masterplan can put Southall’s cultural identity at its heart. Rather than establish a fixed set of principles and deliverables, the strategy acts as a framework capable of responding to future changes providing a longstanding practical toolkit that will retain relevance for years to come.
